All’s well

All’s well at the moment.  Kieran is back at school after his slip in the ice last week with the ankle doing well.  He has been busy writing a script for his pals at school to perform in drama class.  He got me to read with him but of course I didn’t do it right, wrong intonation, but then I’m not doing drama and Kieran is always right!!

Two favourite programmes for us both at the mo are Primeval & Torchwood - both great but there’s not enough of them.  Dancing on Ice is good but I doubt my fav will win - its Gareth by the way, there’s something I just cant stand about that Chris - dont know why, perhaps because he knows he already has the skills to do the job when the others had to start from scratch, although I bet Suzanne has done dance and been to drama school.

Been at various meetings this week across Cambridgeshire, and when the weather is bright I love driving round.  Met with Carina today and she can always win me round by telling me how lovely Kieran is.  Sure fire way to get me on side.

Big conference that I’ve supported the set up for tomorrow.  Prof Wikstrom frm Cambridge Uni delivering some extensive research on adolescent offending based on his work in Peterborough.  It will be really interesting - providing I can stay focussed all day as I tend to lose when listening to academics, and providing I can pick through his Swedish accent.  Otherwise should be a barrel of laughs!

Am now part of the Sheilas Wheels crew and Kieran says I must wear pink, sing and buy an open topped car.  Unfortunately I look awful in bright baby pink, can’t sing a note and can’t afford an open top.

Went to an excellent evening at the Museum of Zoology at Cambridge Uni last week with Kieran.  It was set up by Froglife (www.froglife.org) around the Life In Cold Blood series (perhaps I should have put that in my fav programmes above? - sorry Sir David but John Barrowman beats you hands down).  If anyone fancies become a Froglife Friend there’s the time limited chance to sign up for free on their website.

All the best to everyone

Domestic bliss - almost

Its a strange feeling when a non- domesticated person like me starts getting all house-wifely, without the husband bit.  I have not only sorted old files (why do we keep bills from years ago for services that we no longer have?) but also tidied the garage and fixed Kieran’s bike.  Plus I cooked a lovely roasted dinner - not a single bit came from a packet or needed the microwave.  This may not seem strange to most people but usually my time is so precious that if dinner takes more than 10 minutes to prepare I will go to McDs.  And the bigger bonus is that Kieran ate every bit.  Those who have known me a long time will also know that Kieran likes plain food without the “V” word, but he it all with no complaints - not even when I roasted the carrots and he only likes them raw.

I have had periods when I have taken time off work, the longest being siz months, and it doesn’t take me long to get bored with all the domesticated stuff.  But I rarely get time to really clear out and sort and I feel so much better afterwards that I’m glad I’ve taken the time.  If Kieran had been more mobile I would have felt the pressure to be out & about doing stuff but I’ve been content to let him play on his PS2 & watch TV (I’d usually be moaning about sitting in front of the TV etc for more than an hour).  So I’ve been able to really get stuff done.

The weather was overcast today and spitting at times, but I’m hoping it will get better so I can start some gardening work.  I found my big hedge trimmers hidden at the bottom of a chest in the garage, which was a pleasant surprise because I thought they had been taken when I had some workmen hear a few years ago and ever since I have struggled to keep the hedges under control by hand.  So as soon as its dry enough I’m going out, machine in hand and being ruthless with the shrubs.  For once my neighbours will not think I have the scruffiest garden.  Because the front is so large I have always struggled to keep it neat.  Luckily the grass grows at half the speed of the back garden, and last year I created a small meadow area where I can deliberately let the grass grow as long as it likes.  I had to shape it in a semi-circle though to make it look deliberate because I kept getting people knocking at my door.  They would say how they understood that I worked all day, that it must be so hard to manage, and would I like the number of their gardener?

Kieran gave his video statement to the police today, so hopefully that incident will come to an end soon.

Bracing!

Instead of a cast Kieran is now in an ankle brace.  The good news is that his ankle is healing so very well that the plaster is off and a plastic ankle brace is now on, which can be removed at night and for the all important bath - just running it now.  Laughing
Unfortunately PDH didn’t have the brace when we got there so we had to go across to Edith Cavell, sans plaster, to get one.  NHS!  3 weeks in the brace & hopefully back to two feet.

Apologies

My sincere apologies to all those who read this blog and think I’m near retirement age!  Apparently I must be based on what I’ve written.  Thank God I don’t feel it Wink

Domestic Goddess!

Today I am a domestic goddess!!!!
Surprised?  Of course you are, so am I!
With Kieran in plaster lying on the sofa play with his PS2 he is not hassling me, so I have not only fumigated his bedroom (why did the fracture nurse tell him he mustn’t shower, its a red rag to a 12 year old boy!), but I have made a chocolate cake and a lovely chocolately tray bake - has all sorts of delightful things in it even though it doesn’t look at pretty as it could.
So now my washing and ironing is up todate just got some emails to catch up on and then a bit of “gocompare.com” and “confused.com” stuff as its nearly that time of year again.  The weather is making me feel the need for a jolly good spring clean - although may be its a bit of nesting?
Whatever it is life is full of the joys of spring - as long as its wrapped up warm.

More of the same

Another day at home with Kieran, fetching and carrying and nagging for him to do schoolwork.  I know he is bored, poor thing.  It’s not much fun having your leg up all day laying in one position.  And I think he is feeling a bit guilty today as he has to ask for help with simple things like moving pillows, reaching to get his tracksuit trousers over his cast and finding all his pens and pencils for schoolwork.  Anyway we were naughty and I ordered in pizza.  With working and running round afetr him I couldn’t be bothered to do anything else.  I’m really tired now.  I wasn’t cut out to be a nurse or carer.  But I will plug on.

Heads & Bones

Poor Kieran has been in the wars just recently.

3 weeks ago he was assaulted by a group of kids on his way home from school with a brick to the head leading to lots of blood, a hospital visit and super glue on the wound.  He now has a little bald spot and a red scar.  The kids were named and reported to the police but they denied it of course, and as Kieran couldn’t say which one threw the brick there is officially no evidence.  Now because of the work I do I can say professionally that actually these are vulnerable children, whose parents have not demonstrated very good parenting skills and need help and support.  My opinion as a mother who has brought up her son to be a good and respectful child is that these lads need to be sorted and made to understand and pay!

Anyway he has recovered, and was back at school straight away, brave as he is he wasn’t to be discouraged from using the same route home, despite being advised by the police to choose another way.  We managed to get our local neighbourhood policing panel to put additional policing in place before and after school on that route for the next 3 months as part of their local priorities.

Yesterday we were back at the hospital.  This time because Kieran went over on his ankle whilst playing basketball at school.  I thought it was just a sprain but as there wasn’t much swelling compared with last time he had a sprain and he couldn’t put the slightest bit of weight on it I took him to A&E.  After an x-ray it turns out he has a broken bone and now has a temporary cast.  Next week if the swelling is down he will have a more permanent one for about 6 weeks, depending on how well its healing.  Luckily he was only in real pain when the foot was touched.  He is now on crutches and having fun getting me to run round for him.  He can’t go back to school until he has the new cast and has to keep his leg raised.  But I’m getting my own back by making him do homework, reading and practising his keyboard during school hours!

Unfortunatley Kieran wont be able to do any sports for weeks.  I’ve had to cancel his trampoline class for the next 3 months as they said at the hospital it would be a very bad idea.  Hopefully he can pick up karate again when his cast is off but I suspect gymnastics will need to wait for a while too.  It might be nice not to be taxi driver but actually I’d rather he did his classes.  Besides I will have to take him to school and back everyday for ages so I will still be taxi driver.

I hope that by tomorrow he will have settled and not keep me up and down all the time.  Well I can hope.
